Your Turn to Ask
How do I certify an employee’s service that is eligible for the hazardous duty supplement?
The Certification of Hazardous Duty (VRS-77)is used to certify service eligible for the hazardous duty supplement. On the form, fill in the VRS job name, years of service and months of eligible service performed at your employer before signing and returning it to VRS. The form should be signed by a staff member who is assigned a designated employer role in myVRS Navigator.
Advise the employee that former employers would also need to complete a VRS-77 form to certify prior periods of hazardous duty service eligible for the supplement and return the form to VRS. If you have an employee who is separating now, you can complete the form at the time of separation and submit it to VRS. The form will remain in the member’s record.
Be sure to enroll hazardous duty-eligible employees with the correct job name in myVRS Navigator (police officer, deputy sheriff, firefighter, jailer, for example). When enrolling a new employee, the job name selected will automatically enroll the employee in the correct retirement plan and apply the appropriate benefits to their member record.
