What do I need to know about online retirement?

Online retirement becomes available to members this year through a gradual rollout by employer. Watch for an email with details. VRS also has created a webpage to assist employers that includes:

  • Refresher on online certification process.
  • Recorded Education & Training presentation for employers.
  • Responses to common questions.
  • Overview of online retirement process for members.
  • Summary of myVRS features coming online for members and retirees.

Retiring members are invited to log in to their myVRS accounts and explore the Retirement Planning section. Members eligible to retire using the online system will see the Apply Now button. Employers should continue to provide the normal level of counseling to employees as they prepare to retire, especially regarding employer benefits.

Members who retire online in myVRS will find pre-retirement counseling information, including videos and step-by-step guidance at key decision points. The online application experience is designed to be intuitive and self-service, replacing the paper application for most members.

Online retirement is not yet accessible to all members. Primary exceptions include those retiring with:

  • Hazardous duty service.
  • Judicial service.
  • Long-term disability in their record or retiring on disability.
  • Approved Domestic Relations Orders (ADRO) on file.
  • Ongoing purchase of prior service agreements.

Members in those situations will see a message letting them know myVRS cannot accept their online application. They should use the Application for Service Retirement (VRS-5)or the Application for Disability Retirement (VRS-6)and related forms.
