In case you receive the question from recent retirees, you can let them know that VRS will mail the IRS Form 1099-R by the end of January for filing with their 2020 federal and state tax returns. The forms also are posted in retirees’ myVRS accounts for easy access.

Retirees who have imputed income from group life insurance coverage in excess of $50,000 will receive a Form W-2 from VRS. The Form W-2 shows the amount of imputed income and FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) withheld.

Work-related disability retirees do not receive a Form 1099-R. These retirees will receive an annual income verification letter by the end of January for tax-filing purposes.
