Know Your Options Before Returning to Work

If you’re thinking about working again, make sure you understand how it could affect your benefits.

While working for a non-VRS employer won’t change your pension, taking a covered position with a VRS-participating employer will stop your monthly payments. You’ll rejoin VRS as an active member, and any cost-of-living adjustments you’ve received will end. When you retire again, subsequent COLAs will be calculated as if you were retiring for the first time. The loss of accumulated COLAs may mean your new benefit is lower than the one you were receiving before returning to work.

Retirees who return to work in part-time (non-covered) or critical shortage positions with a VRS employer must meet certain requirements, including the required break in service.

Reminders on Tax Withholding

Need to change your tax withholding? Visit your myVRS account. The income tax calculation tool allows you to see the impact of any changes to your tax withholding amount and submit changes online. Your account will be updated automatically.

You can also change your withholding by submitting a new Request for Income Tax Withholding (VRS-15). Please read the form carefully as the IRS instructions for determining the withholding amount have changed in recent years.
