Retiree 1099-R Forms Mail in Late January

In case you receive the question from recent retirees, you can let them know that VRS will mail the IRS Form 1099-R by the end of January for filing with their 2021 federal and state tax returns. Retirees who have imputed income from group life insurance coverage (more than $50,000) will receive a Form W-2 from VRS. The Form W-2 shows the amount of imputed income and FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) withheld.
Work-related disability retirees do not receive a Form 1099-R. These retirees will receive an annual income verification letter by the end of January for tax-filing purposes.
