An important step VRS members can take to guard against identity theft is to claim their online myVRS and defined contribution accounts. By taking ownership of their online accounts, members prevent others from fraudulently claiming their accounts and can more easily detect unusual activity.

Here are three additional steps members can take to safeguard personal and financial information online:

1. Create strong, complex passwords for their accounts, using a passphrase. Two-factor or multi-factor authentication is a top method for preventing unauthorized access to accounts.
2. Keep antivirus and antispyware software up to date.
3. Be aware of what is shared on social media. Hackers can use profile information, photos and other content to gain unauthorized access to accounts or devices.
